Writing Balinese Script, preserving local genius significantly
Singaraja- Again, Balinese Education Department of Ganesha University of Education showed concern to Balinese culture through the training about writing Balinese Script entitled ‘Pelatihan Nyurat Lontar Siswa SMP se-Kota Singaraja’.
According to the chairman of the committee I Wayan Gede Wisnu, SS, M.Si., the cost should be spent for the event entirely come from the budget of the Faculty of Language and Art, when encountered on the event at the Faculty of Languages and Art Seminar Room, on Tuesday(November, 27th 2012).
The training in writing Balinese Script divided into two sessions. The first session was a talk given by Ida Bagus Rai, SS, M.Pd. as a lecturer of Balinese Education Department who was explaining some theories when going to write on papyrus (kind of palm leaves which could be written). The event continued with the direct practice of writing Balinese Script on papyrus by the participants from junior high school students. Although whole stationery supplied by the committee, however many students brought their own stationery, especially pens to write on papyrus called 'pengerupak'. The practice ended when students have completed their writing by coloring the paper with burned hazelnuts. This method is Balinese traditional method for coloring paper especially for papyrus.
Obviously the event was quite surprising because there were many participants came from out of Singaraja. This meant that many people have high enthusiasm in the preservation of local genius in this case about Balinese script.
Gede Wisnu admitted “Even though the students have often followed the competition of writing Balinese script whether in PORSENI or other, but in fact the students still do not understand how to do it well. So it is not only about the rules in writing, but also the other side that’s still poorly understood”. He said that writing on palm leaves had to be started with sitting in good posture. “It is also about how to hold ‘pengerupak’ in a right way and how to move ‘pengerupak’ correctly according to the rules so that the writing becomes perfect”, Gede Wisnu said. That’s why he hoped that from the event, the students would realize that to preserve a culture is not something easy.
